About MENGOS

The Middle East NGOs Gateway Project [MENGOS] is an Internet gateway containing information about non-governmental organizations, funding agencies, events, projects, success stories of individuals as well as organizations, and other topics relevant to nongovernmental organizations across the Arab Middle East. It hopes to establish an electronic forum linking nonprofits to facilitate exchange of experiences, best-practices, material resources, and other valuable information regarding the usage of IT primarily in Arabic. MENGOS is a project of Virtual Activism and its branch Center for Knowledge Society in Cairo, Egypt.

MENGOS aims at disseminating information and promoting human rights and development initiatives in the Arab Middle East. In particular, MENGOS focuses on progressive, under represented and marginalized NGOs to give them voice and presence on the Internet. The Gateway therefore is essentially a database of NGOs who are both online and offline, in countries that are members of the Arab League, and who work on progressive human rights and development issues.

The database is a multi-lingual database [Arabic/English/French] that allows internet users to identify NGOs by name, region, area of focus, or primary contact person in three languages. It opens channels for donors to identify potential grantees, and opens channels of communication and networking among nonprofit organizations throughout the Middle East and beyond.
