Press Release - 9 Feb 2013:
Virtual Activism, the Center for Knowledge Society, would like to express deep concern regarding the Egyptian Administrative Court's decision today to ban Youtube and 'other sites' posting material deemed 'insulting to the Prophet', for 30 days. Virtual Activism sees this as a new way to censor the internet and curb freedom of speech and expression. We also view this as an open road to empower an already autocratic and repressive government as manifested in other decisions.
While Virtual Activism realizes the technical difficulty of "banning for 30 days", we view this matter with great concern because it opens the door for further censorship of the internet related to any opposing views. We believe that the '30 day ban' is a test of the technical abilities of the Egyptian government to censor websites, and therefore expect many more to come.
Once again Virtual Activism would like to stress that banning is not and has never been a solution. People with some technical skills will be able to bypass the ban. We would like to stress that only an honest and open discussion of the issues and civilized responses to offending videos/sites will be helpful.
